How to Use This Checklist
After someone dies, one of the most important tasks is identifying every asset they owned. Missing even one bank account, insurance policy, or property title can mean lost money that rightfully belongs to the estate. This checklist is designed to be exhaustive — not every item will apply, but by going through each one systematically, you ensure nothing is overlooked.
Tip: Print this page (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P) and work through it methodically. For each item, note whether it applies, the current status, and any reference numbers. Bring the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, the death certificate, and your own ID when contacting any institution.
1. Banking & Cash
Banks will not proactively notify you of existing accounts. You must contact each bank individually with the deceased's HKID number. Hong Kong has over 150 licensed banks — start with the major retail banks.
Check all major banks: HSBC, Hang Seng, Bank of China, Standard Chartered, ICBC, Bank of East Asia, DBS, Citibank, etc. Visit branches with death certificate and HKID to request a deceased account search.
Including passbook savings accounts. Check for physical passbooks at home — many older adults kept passbook accounts at multiple banks. Also check for e-Savings accounts at virtual banks (ZA Bank, Mox, livi, etc.).
Look for FD certificates or confirmation letters at home. Banks will confirm FD balances when you report the death. Note maturity dates — early termination may incur penalties but the principal is still an estate asset.
Many HK residents hold USD, RMB, GBP, or AUD savings. These may be at the same bank as HKD accounts or at separate institutions. Ask each bank to search all currency denominations.
Joint accounts with "either to sign" mandate typically pass to the surviving holder automatically outside the estate. Joint accounts with "both to sign" are frozen on death. Confirm the mandate type with the bank.
Accounts with no transactions for 12+ months may be classified as dormant. Banks still hold the funds. In Hong Kong, banks do not transfer unclaimed balances to the government — the money stays at the bank indefinitely. Contact the bank's deceased estates department.
2. Property & Real Estate
Search the Land Registry (www.landreg.gov.hk) using the deceased's name and HKID. A land search costs HK$25 online. This reveals all registered interests in Hong Kong property.
Land Registry search by name/HKID. Joint tenancy properties pass by survivorship — file a "Memorial of Survivorship" at the Land Registry. Tenants-in-common shares form part of the estate.
Offices, shops, factory units, godowns. Search Land Registry and check for tenancy agreements among the deceased's papers. Contact the property management company for any outstanding rental income.
Often purchased separately from residential units. Car parks have their own title deeds and are registered at the Land Registry. Check management office records and any monthly rental income.
New Territories indigenous villagers may hold village house lots. Search the Land Registry and contact the relevant District Lands Office. Be aware of alienation restrictions on New Grant lots.
Many HK residents own property in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhongshan, or other Mainland cities. Check for property certificates (房產證/不動產權證書) at home. You will need a notarised succession certificate from a Mainland notary public. Contact the local Housing Authority (房管局) in the relevant city.
UK, Australia, Canada, USA, and Southeast Asia are common. Look for mortgage statements, property tax bills, rental income records, or correspondence from overseas solicitors/real estate agents. Each country has its own probate requirements.
3. Insurance Policies
There is no central insurance policy register in Hong Kong. Search the deceased's papers for policy documents, premium payment records, and correspondence from insurers. Check bank statements for regular premium debits.
Contact major insurers: AIA, Prudential, Manulife, Sun Life, FWD, HSBC Life, BOC Life, China Life, etc. Provide death certificate and policy number (if known). Life insurance with a named beneficiary pays directly to the beneficiary outside the estate.
If the deceased was diagnosed with a critical illness before death, there may be an unclaimed CI payout. Check if the policy had a CI rider or standalone CI cover. Contact the insurer's claims department.
Outstanding medical claims for treatment before death can still be submitted. Check VHIS (Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme) policies, corporate medical plans, and any top-up medical cover. Claims are usually valid up to 90 days after the policy ends.
Contact the deceased's employer HR department. Many employers provide group life cover (typically 1-3x annual salary) and may also offer accidental death benefits. Ask for the employee benefits summary.
If the deceased had a mortgage, check whether mortgage protection insurance was taken out. This may pay off the outstanding mortgage balance. Contact the mortgage lender and any insurer named in the mortgage documents.
If the deceased died while travelling or had an annual travel policy, check for accidental death cover. Contact the travel insurer and the credit card company (many credit cards include complimentary travel insurance).
4. Retirement & Pensions
The MPFA maintains a central database. Call the MPF hotline at 2918 0102 or use the "Personal Account" enquiry at mpfa.org.hk to search for all MPF accounts linked to the deceased's HKID.
Contact the deceased's current employer to identify the MPF trustee. Major trustees: Manulife, HSBC, AIA, Sun Life, BCT, BOCI-Prudential. Submit death certificate and Grant of Probate to claim.
People who changed jobs may have multiple preserved MPF accounts scattered across different trustees. Use the MPFA's "Account Consolidation" search or call 2918 0102 to locate all accounts by HKID.
Tax-deductible voluntary contributions (TVC) accounts are separate from mandatory accounts. These may be held at a different trustee from the employer scheme. Check MPFA records.
Older or larger employers (e.g., government, utilities, banks) may run ORSO pension schemes instead of or in addition to MPF. Contact the employer's HR department. The MPFA also regulates ORSO schemes.
UK State Pension (contact DWP International), US Social Security (contact SSA), Australian Superannuation (contact ATO for lost super search), Canadian CPP/OAS, Singapore CPF. Check if the deceased ever worked overseas and accumulated pension entitlements.
5. Investments & Securities
Search for brokerage account statements, contract notes, dividend cheques, and annual reports among the deceased's papers. Contact CCASS (the Central Clearing and Settlement System) via HKEX for shares held in the CCASS system.
Check with securities brokers (there are 500+ in HK). Look for monthly/quarterly statements, contract notes, or dividend notifications. Contact HKEX Investor Services at 2840 3025 for shares held in CCASS. Also check for shares held through bank securities services (HSBC, Hang Seng, etc.).
iBonds, Silver Bonds, Green Bonds issued by the HKSAR Government are held via placing banks or Hong Kong Securities Clearing Company. Corporate bonds may be held through brokers. Check for bond certificates or CMU (Central Moneymarkets Unit) statements.
Typically held through banks or fund platforms (e.g., FundRich, FSM). Check bank statements for regular investment plan debits. Contact the fund house directly if the deceased held units outside a bank — major managers include BlackRock, Fidelity, Schroders, JP Morgan AM.
Traded like stocks through brokers. The Tracker Fund of Hong Kong (2800.HK) is the most widely held. Check brokerage accounts and bank securities accounts.
Older investors may hold physical share certificates at home or in a safe deposit box. These are still valid. Contact the company's share registrar (Computershare, Tricor, Link Market Services) to verify ownership and arrange transfer. Look for certificates in safes, filing cabinets, and safe deposit boxes.
6. Business Interests
Search the Companies Registry (www.icris.cr.gov.hk) for directorships and shareholdings. Search the Business Registration Office for sole proprietorships and partnerships. Searches cost HK$22 each online.
Search the Business Registration Office by the deceased's name/HKID. The business assets and liabilities pass to the estate. You may need to wind up or transfer the business. Contact the Inland Revenue Department for outstanding tax liabilities.
Review the partnership agreement for succession provisions. The deceased's share of partnership assets is an estate asset. Contact surviving partners. Check the Business Registration records for all partnerships the deceased was involved in.
Search the Companies Registry (ICRIS) for all companies where the deceased was a shareholder or director. Review the company's Articles of Association for share transfer provisions. The shares form part of the estate and must be valued (typically by an accountant).
Search the Intellectual Property Department (ipd.gov.hk) for registered patents and trademarks. Copyright does not require registration but may generate royalty income. Check for licensing agreements, royalty statements, and any domain names generating income.
7. Government Amounts Owed
Various government departments may owe money to the deceased. These amounts form part of the estate.
File a final tax return for the deceased. If the deceased overpaid salaries tax or profits tax, a refund is due to the estate. Contact IRD at 187 8022 to notify them of the death and request clearance.
If the deceased was a property owner, check whether any rates rebates or government rent concessions are outstanding. Contact the Rating and Valuation Department at 2152 0111.
Deposits paid to CLP/HK Electric, Towngas, and the Water Supplies Department are refundable when the account is closed. Contact each utility provider with the death certificate and account details. CLP: 2678 2678. HK Electric: 2887 3411. Towngas: 2880 6988. Water: 2824 5000.
8. Digital & Online Assets
Digital assets are increasingly valuable. Check the deceased's devices (phone, computer, tablet) and email accounts for clues. Many digital services have specific processes for deceased account holders.
Email is the master key to finding other assets — search for bank statements, insurance renewals, investment confirmations. Google has an Inactive Account Manager; Apple has a Digital Legacy program; Microsoft has a Next of Kin process.
Check the deceased's phone for payment apps. Each platform has a bereavement process. PayPal: submit death certificate to customer service. Alipay HK / WeChat Pay: contact customer support with death certificate and proof of relationship. Check for stored balances.
Look for hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor), exchange accounts (Binance, Coinbase, OSL, HashKey), recovery seed phrases written on paper, and crypto-related apps on the deceased's phone. Without private keys or seed phrases, crypto may be irrecoverable. Check email for exchange registration confirmations.
Check domain registrars (GoDaddy, Namecheap, HKDNR for .hk domains). Domains can have significant value. Look for renewal notices in email. Revenue-generating websites (e-commerce, advertising) should be identified and maintained during estate administration.
9. Physical Assets & Valuables
Physical assets should be documented, photographed, and securely stored during estate administration. Professional valuations may be needed for high-value items.
There is no central registry in HK. Contact each bank and private vault operator (Malca-Amit, Guardian, Brink's) to check if the deceased rented a box. The EBSU (Estate Beneficiaries Support Unit) at Home Affairs Dept (2835 1535) oversees the inspection process.
Check for self-storage rental agreements or regular payments in bank statements. Major operators: StorHub, RedBox, SC Storage, Spacebox. Contact each facility.
Search the Transport Department vehicle registry. Check for vehicle registration documents, insurance certificates, and tunnel tag accounts (Autotoll). Contact the Transport Department at 2804 2600 for a vehicle ownership search by HKID.
Registered with the Marine Department. Search the Shipping Register for vessel ownership. Contact the Marine Department at 2852 3001. Check for berth/mooring fees and marine insurance policies.
Document and photograph all items. Obtain professional valuations from auction houses (Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams HK) or certified appraisers. Check for insurance riders or scheduled items on home contents policies that may list valuable pieces.
Check home safes, bedroom drawers, and safe deposit boxes. Obtain valuations from certified gemologists or reputable jewellers. Look for purchase receipts, certificates of authenticity (e.g., GIA diamond reports), and insurance appraisals. Gold bars/coins should be weighed and valued at current spot price.
10. Debts Owed TO the Deceased
Money that other people or entities owe to the deceased is an asset of the estate. The estate administrator has a duty to collect these debts.
Check the deceased's records for loan agreements, IOUs, promissory notes, or bank transfer records showing large sums sent to individuals. Text messages and emails may contain evidence of informal loans. The estate can demand repayment.
If the deceased was a landlord, tenants may be holding rental deposits that will eventually be returned or offset against the final rent. More importantly, check for ongoing rental income owed. Review tenancy agreements and contact tenants or the property management agent.
11. Overseas Assets by Country
If the deceased lived, worked, or invested overseas, there may be assets in those countries. Each jurisdiction has its own probate process. A Hong Kong Grant of Probate may need to be "resealed" in other common-law jurisdictions.
Search: UK bank accounts (write to each bank), NS&I (Premium Bonds, savings), HMRC for tax refunds, DWP for State Pension. Use the free government "Tell Us Once" service. UK probate (or reseal of HK grant) is needed for assets over £5,000. Contact: GOV.UK bereavement service.
Search: US bank accounts, 401(k)/IRA retirement accounts, Social Security benefits, state unclaimed property databases (missingmoney.com). US estate tax may apply if US-situs assets exceed US$60,000 for non-residents. Contact: IRS, SSA, each state's unclaimed property office.
Search: Canadian bank accounts, RRSP/RRIF/TFSA accounts, Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), provincial unclaimed property registries. File a final Canadian tax return. Contact: CRA (Canada Revenue Agency), Service Canada, Bank of Canada unclaimed balances.
Search: Australian bank accounts, superannuation (use ATO's "Super Fund Lookup" and "myGov" lost super search), Medicare refunds, Centrelink benefits. Australia has a central unclaimed money register at ASIC. Contact: ATO (13 28 65), each super fund, Services Australia.
Search: Bank accounts (ICBC, BOC, CCB, ABC, CMB, etc.), property (房管局), social insurance/pension (社保局), investment accounts (stock accounts at CSDCC). Requires notarised succession certificate from a Mainland notary public. Contact: The specific bank branch where the account was opened; local 公證處 (notary office).
Search: Singapore bank accounts (DBS, OCBC, UOB), CPF (Central Provident Fund) balances, SRS (Supplementary Retirement Scheme), insurance policies via the Life Insurance Association. Singapore Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration required. Contact: CPF Board, MAS, each bank.

檢查債券證書或CMU(中央結算系統)結單。

聯繫:GOV.UK喪親服務。
